As someone who has been (unsuccessfully) experimenting with ways to keep cool in the brutal nyc summers, I was thrilled to see that Jezebel covered the topic earlier today. Some of the better tips were to wear natural fibers, light layers for going to and from work, and keeping a spare shirt at the office. And in one of the comments, someone suggests wearing shorts under skirts, which would...

I’m so excited for the Met’s latest fashion exhibit! At the link, Vogue special events planner Sylvana Soto-Ward explains how she prepares for the annual Costume Institute Gala, which will open the show on Monday. The event takes 10 months to plan and is sponsored by the Gap this year.

To design a circus-inspired look and have it not look like a costume is certainly a tough challenge. It requires an aesthetic that is equal parts whimsy and restraint, which in theory shouldn’t be a problem for any designer that makes it to the finale of Project Runway. But only one designer managed to create a look that could qualify as circus couture:
Emilio drew inspiration from the...
I just started using Polyvore (after reading this article in the New Yorker) and I can confirm that it is incredibly addictive! The site allows you to play fashion editor by creating collages of clothing from online stores. This is the first set I created, inspired by warm weather and spring and girly colors, and I encourage you to go check it out for yourselves!

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted - sorry! - but I just finished watching Project Runway and I have to express how outraged I am. How could they send Anthony home over Mila, with her ugly print and even uglier dress (that the model couldn’t even walk in!) or Jonathan, who, while I appreciate his effort, sent down a bland, unflattering print and a bizarre backwards jacket. ...
This episode focused a lot on the Tin Man Hershey Kiss Dirty Laundry Bag and Vegas Dancer Barbie nightmares, but there were actually some decent outfits in this episode of Project Runway. The challenge was to create an unconventional look using materials from a hardware store, with an accessory to compliment and enhance the look.
I agree that Jay absolutely deserved the win; when I saw he...

Best of the New York Fall 2010 Collections
Last week’s fall 2010 collections marked the end of an era; they were the last shows to take place in the Bryant Park tents. This September, fashion week will center around Damrosch Park, a venue in Lincoln Center. For me, the highlights were Marchesa and Monique Lhuillier, and I also loved that so many collections included a gorgeous shade of deep red in their color palettes.

So, this is about a week late, but in anticipation of tonight’s episode of Project Runway I’m going to post my thoughts on last week’s episode. The challenge was to design a look for the cover of a top fashion magazine, which of course was Nina Garcia’s Marie Claire, to be worn by a top model, which of course was host Heidi Klum. I was completely in agreement with the top...
On last night’s Project Runway, I really appreciated the concept of last night’s challenge, which was to create a signature dress for Campbell’s Address Your Heart program. I loved that they used women who have been affected by heart disease as models, and I thought it was really touching and inspiring that some of them wanted dresses that intentionally showed their scars.

“It’s about the moon,”said Giorgio Armani regarding his latest collection,
“…something romantic and dreamy, far away from our everyday life.” The gimmick worked well as a showcase for his usual tailored lines and his choice of opulent, crystal-incrusted fabrics:
The moon reference on the suit jacket is pretty literal, but it’s also cleverly designed...
Jean Paul Gaultier was inspired by the Aztecs, Mexico, and Avatar to create a fabulous collection full of vibrant blues and greens, intricate weaving, and palm frond accessories. It made me want to run away to a deserted island and lounge on the beach all day wearing an evening gown knitted from palm leaves. I’ve always been a bit island-obsessed but I’ve never considered actually...
I just love Dior. John Galliano is the one designer I can count on to deliver a mix of impeccable construction, glamour, and theatricality each season - everything that haute couture should be about. He didn’t disappoint with the equestrian-themed Spring 2010 collection, which took place earlier today in Paris. Below are some of my favorite designs:
The red jacket is truly...
Last night, Project Runway finally gave us a decent challenge; create a party-worthy look out of a potato sack (straight from the farm!) And the results weren’t half bad!
This picture does not do Amy’s dress justice; on the runway, it looked soft and almost breezy. Not only did she “keep the integrity” of the burlap, she somehow managed to make it classy.

The 2010 Golden Globes took place last night, and although I wasn’t originally planning to watch, it’s hard for me to resist any event with fabulous clothing and drunk celebrities. Here’s some of my favorite looks:
Marion Cotillard in a lingerie-inspired Christian Dior gown
Jennifer Garner in streamlined, sparkly Atelier Versace
Emily Blunt in Dolce & Gabbana...
A helpful hint for eliminating the musty smell of vintage clothing: mix one part vodka with two parts water in a spray bottle. “It works every time—that’s the power of vodka for you,” says Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men. So I guess the next time someone spills a vodka tonic on your favorite vintage dress, just smile and say thanks?

Happy (almost) New Year! It’s been awhile since I’ve written here but I figured a New Years fashion post was in order. I personally use New Years as an excuse to wear the most sparkly, overly sequined clothing I can find, and a friend and I decided that Forever 21 would probably be the most appropriate place to find such clothing. We spent the first 20 minutes making fun of the...

Project Runway Season 6 Finale
Well, the winner was no big surprise for this long anticipated but dreadfully boring season of Project Runway. So I’m just going to post some of my favorite looks from the finale:
Carol Hannah:
Carol Hannah designed this dress as the 13th “surprise” look, which would have been impressive for its meticulous draping alone but becomes even more so when you take into account...

Um, so I had this really elaborate post about costume designers and how hopefully they will finally get some recognition following the example of Janie Bryant (Mad Men), along with pictures, and then my internet crashed. So, here’s the short version:
In the past, costume designers like Edith Head, Adrian, and Helen Rose became famous along with their designs. Unfortunately, nowadays...
