To design a circus-inspired look and have it not look like a costume is certainly a tough challenge. It requires an aesthetic that is equal parts whimsy and restraint, which in theory shouldn’t be a problem for any designer that makes it to the finale of Project Runway. But only one designer managed to create a look that could qualify as circus couture:

Emilio drew inspiration from the ubiquitous stripes and polka dots at the circus and transformed them into a fabulous, wearable gown. Although his over-the-top arrogance made me wish I hated his design, it really was spectacular. He secured his spot in Bryant Park, along with one other designer:

Seth Aaron’s Tim Burton-esque jacket is fantastic and well made, but paired with red leather pants and oversized collar (which I did like on its own) it begins to fall into costume territory. Regardless, he made it to Bryant Part, along with one of the two following designers:

Jay (left) and Mila (right) will battle it out for the third spot. In general, I like Jay’s designs but I felt that the Michael Jackson coat just didn’t work, although I could see how the ringmaster inspiration went into it. The pants were well made but safe, which never cuts it in the finale. I have never liked Mila’s mod, colorblocked, cocoon-shaped garments that she sent down every. single. week, and to me this outfit was a disaster. The colors, the fabric, the collar, the inexplicable shininess…nothing about this worked for me.

Last, we have Anthony. Although he made an unfortunate choice of fabric, the neckline and bodice of his dress were lovely. He won’t be competing in Bryant Park, but I saw some images from his decoy collection and they were amazing (think sequins and expertly draped dresses.)
